There’s something weird going on. My house has been ~1100sqft since I bought it (cape-style with unfinished attic/basement) and it’s suddenly jumped by 700sqft. One of my neighbors went from 1400 to 2200. I have a horrible feeling I’m going to be fighting with the city in a couple of months.
I just spent about twenty minutes on the phone with the assessor’s office - one person returned my call within the afternoon, and she routed me to two other very helpful people, all after 4:30 on a Friday. My property card’s all straightened out with very little hassle. Evidently their office is in the process of trying to update records, and some things are getting scrambled.
I recommend that other city property owners check their own records now and make sure everything’s correct. I would not have wanted to have to contest this error after the 2009 tax bills came out!
